Netflix cancels That 90s Show after two seasons, actor Kurtwood Smith confirms

In a disappointing announcement for fans, Netflix has decided not to move forward with more instalments of That 90s Show, the sequel to the beloved That 70s Show. The cancellation comes just over a month after the release of Part 3, on August 22, 2024, marking the end of the series after a two-season run.
The news was confirmed by series star Kurtwood Smith, who took to Instagram to share the update with fans. Smith, who reprised his iconic role as Red Forman, expressed his gratitude to the show’s loyal audience, saying, “I know you have been asking me when season 3 is coming, but I have tough newsâ€æNetflix will not be renewing.” He went on to thank viewers for their support, noting how people from all over the world have reached out to him in person and on social media.
Smith continued, “I’ve loved every minute of getting to bring Grandpa Red to life for you all…this show had so much heart behind it and the most wonderful cast, writers, directors, producers, and crew an actor could hope to work with.” He concluded his message with a hopeful note, borrowing a phrase from his character, Red Forman, to say, “We aren’t going to be dumbassesâ€æwe will shop the show, because good grandparents would try hard to get these kids graduated from high school.”
That 90s Show followed the same nostalgic revival formula used in shows like Fuller House, reviving a beloved multi-cam sitcom by bringing back some of its original cast members alongside a new, younger generation. In this case, Kurtwood Smith and Debra Jo Rupp reprised their roles as Red and Kitty Forman, now grandparents to a new group of teenagers.
The show was set in the summer of 1995, where the Formans’ granddaughter and her friends navigated the trials and tribulations of growing up, all under the watchful eyes of Red and Kitty.
The 10-episode first season, or Part 1, of That 90s Show was released to much fanfare, featuring guest appearances from original That 70s Show stars such as Topher Grace, Ashton Kutcher, Mila Kunis, and Wilmer Valderrama. The show was renewed for a second season, which consisted of 16 episodes, released in two parts — Part 2 and Part 3.
